A Lasting Republican Campaign Message:
A Positive, Exemplary Community

By JOHN J. TORRENTI

Ten years ago, Mike Pace and Bill Peace campaigned on the message: A Positive, Exemplary, Community, and that is exactly what Old Saybrook has become. Recent flyers promoting the Stuart-Manning campaign would like you to believe they know how to do the job better.

Examine the record and history of the Stuart-Manning group.
They and their party have been on the wrong side of every issue Old Saybrook has faced this year.

  1. They worked to defeat the completion of the “Kate” Cultural Arts Center. Amazingly, this project has been completed, opened, and is a resounding success.
  2. They worked to defeat the town budget. Wrong again. The budget is as bare bones as you can get. It is $200K less than the previous one. To reduce it further would be to reduce staff and services.
  3. They worked to defeat the acceptance of the recent town re-evaluation, required by law. Wrong again. 50+ % of the tax payers saw their taxes reduced.
  4. They tried to defeat the W.P.C.A. plan for ground water remediation as demanded by the courts and the D.E.P. Fortunately for the taxpayers in Old Saybrook, the plan was accepted by the voters. If the plan’s opponents had been successful, DEP was ready to ask the court to reinstate a fine of $7000.00 a day for non compliance. We all would have seen a major tax increase to pay for a $100 million + town wide sewer system from Westbrook to the Connecticut River. The sewer system would have required massive pipes running all over town and the work would have meant tearing up streets for months and months. The only benefit would be for a large commercial property in downtown Old Saybrook.
  5. The same group badgered the Board of Finance about approving the grand sum of $35,000 for much needed ball fields for kids to be built on a portion of the Town’s recently acquired property on Ferry Road. The same property was aggressively sought by an adjacent large property owner for “questionable” purposes.
Items 2, 3, and 4 went to referendum and were resoundingly approved.

Old Saybrook is a wonderful place to live. It has one of the lowest tax rates in the state, excellent financial rating and reserves. Old Saybrook provides services for both youth and elderly, award winning Schools, excellent police, fire and ambulance service and protection. This has all been accomplished by the hard work and guidance of the Pace and Peace team. They know how to get the job done for everyone.

Vote for real leadership on November 3. Vote for Pace and Peace
