Will Joe Courtney Support Free Speech?
Madison CT - Congress is trampling on our right of free speech once again with House Resolution 5175, also known as the Disclose Act. "I strongly urge Rep. Joe Courtney to vote against this latest attempt to shut down free speech in America," Novak said.
HR 5175 requires gun clubs and other organizations to potentially "disclose" the membership list of their organizations (under Title II of the bill) if within 60 days of an election they mention public officials by name. Novak said: "The Supreme Court has previously ruled in NAACP v. Alabama that membership lists are off limits to government control. We the people, not Congress, control this great nation. It is time Congress started listening to us. We do not want to lose our right of free speech or any other freedom that Congress is attempting to sieze from Americans."
"Furthermore," Novak added, "under Title II of the bill, organizations could be required to spend as much as 50% of their ad time on government-written disclosures. As an attorney, Rep. Courtney knows the Supreme Court in Buckley v. Valeo, declared that Americans have a right to voice their opinion to an unlimited extend, if unconnected with a political campaign. This bill, in Sections 201 through 203 potentially puts the US Government's eyes on Americans who exercise their right of free speech to voice a political opinion. This must stop now."
