At a well attended caucus on January 15, 2008, Republican electors of the Town of Old Saybrook chose 40 fellow Republicans to serve on the Town Committee for the next year. By unanimous vote the caucus selected 29 returning and 11 new members. Attorney Michael Cronin, chairman of the nominating committee, noted that this was the largest group of new members to join the Town Committee in many years.

The new group is diverse – some members have lived in town all their lives, while others have recently moved to Old Saybrook. We are fortunate to have some new members with years of experience on other Town Committees, in the state party, and as office holders. At the same time, the Republicans in Old Saybrook will also benefit from the enthusiasm and fresh viewpoints of the members who are just beginning their formal involvement with the party.

The new members selected are: Christopher R. Adams; Jeremiah A. M. Burnham; Raymond V. Collins, Jr.; Valerie S. Conroy; Madeleine B. Fish; Scott M. Giegerich; Jonathan C. Glenney; Carol M. Hanover; Pauline Kezer; Kathleen T. Ledwith; and, Robert D. Missell.

The Town Committee will reorganize in February. At that time a new chairman, vice chairman, treasurer, and secretary will be elected. If there is no primary, returning members joining the group above will be: Salvatore V. Aresco; Sarah V. Becker; Christina P. Burnham; Leo D. (Cal) Caldarella; Julius L. Castagno; Michael E. Cronin, Jr.; Bette J. Del Giorno; Carl P. Fortuna, Jr.; Mario T. Gaboury; Marilyn Giuliano; Bruce Greenfield; Robert K. Hallisey; Walter S. Hirsch; David F. LaMay; Geraldine M. Lewis; Barry E. Maynard; William H. McCarry; Janet V. Murray; Michael A. Pace; Robert D. Partyka; William A. Peace; Sylvia D. Schmitt; Charles E. Sohl; Bradford R. Thorpe; Margaret B. Viggiano; Grant W. Westerson; George W. (Sonny) Whelen, IV; June Willson; and, Jean B. Winkler.

At the February meeting the Town Committee will be selecting Old Saybrook Republicans to be delegates to the upcoming conventions for U.S. House of Representatives, 2 nd Congressional District, the Connecticut State Senate, 20 th and 33 rd Districts, and Connecticut House 23 rd District. Any registered Republican elector can serve as a delegate or an alternate. Contact a member of the Town Committee or send an e-mail to contact@oldsaybrookrepublicans.org if you would like to be a delegate or alternate.

The Town Committee is grateful for the years of service and leadership that Chairman John Torrenti has given to the party. Under his aegis the party has enjoyed successful campaigns for town offices and state representative. His interest in and concern for the welfare of the Town has been unmatched and his shoes will be hard to fill. Thank you, John, for all you have done.
